What do YOU want to do after 60 years?

Today I did what I wanted...ate breakfast with friends...attended Tai Chi class...shopped for socks...lunched on Chinese food...but what I really wanted to do was to walk in the wild and check on the wildflowers. And on your day, you can do whatever you want.

We fought evening rush hour traffic on our way, but it was worth the battle. Paddy, DH, and I took our usual trip to the creek and back. Paddy followed every scent and distraction. She found all sorts of bones, carried them around, and then dropped them as her attention was diverted by a bird, or cricket, or butterfly.

DH walked ahead of me (I lagged behind - attempting photos in the wind) and called, "There's some red here!" and "Here's purple!" He may not know the names, but he knows I want to see all the different varieties starting to bloom.*

We found a few game trails and noticed that the swampy areas were mostly dry. It won't be dry for long as showers are expected over the next few days. This area stays wet once it gets a little rain. We got lucky and stayed dry - the mist started as we headed home.

An empty nest...
Paddy and DH head across the field.
The dewberry vines are blooming (the birds always beat me to the berries).
Paddy had a wonderful time!

She still comes running when we call, "Cookie."
She's not a young dog any longer, but she can still run wild on the prairie.

Some of the bluebonnets were lovely. Others looked sickly - perhaps buggy or suffering from lack of rain.
We will check the bluebonnet meadows in the woods on our next trip
Growing among the prickly pear.
The trees are just beginning to bud.

There are so many dead trees. I worry about potential for fires.
An allium - wild onion? wild garlic? Something else maybe.

Dried grasses from last season.

NOTES:

*I don't know all the names, but I have a number of books and know how to look up what I don't know. There is a Master Naturalist course offered by TDP&W. It is something I might want to do.

SBA, Final Day - A few moments more with friends and Lincoln and then farewell DC.

After breakfast with our friend, MT, we took a little walking tour from Ford's Theater to the White House and Back. It was fine, a good way to end the trip and revisit some of the places we had already been. We walked past Lincoln's church and very few places that remained from Lincoln's time...a hotel, a boardinghouse, two theaters...the guide was "in character" as a detective from the Washington police department. We all had documents to share and we voted at the end - guilty or not guilty.

We walked past the National Archives where we started our tour of DC.
A child lost some wooden beads and a kind "passer-by" put them up on this granite ledge, just in case the child returns.
The Treasury (Is it just me or do some of these buildings look alike?)
I love rows of things. This is a beautiful fence.
[OK. If you think this is obsessive, wait until I post the photos of the DC eagles.]
Barricade or hitching posts or both?

More of our guide (we wouldn't have found Mrs. Surratt guilty).
Last of the blooming trees for us.
Last look at the White House.
Hustling down the path.
Gotta love the signs. Slugs are folks who snag a ride to commute with someone so one can get a free ride and the other can drive in the fast lane.
This was the only place we saw this kind of action. The guard here had a dog out "sniffing" the pizza delivery guy. The back of that vehicle was FULL of pizza.
Reading and sleeping at the airport. Yup. No traffic and TSA Pre again. We were WAY early for our flight.
A Texas sunset welcomed us back to the state as we drove toward the "meet-up" spot with Mom.
DH had a little surprise waiting for me too. I did not use my teeth!

As Dorothy Gale * says, "there's no place like home," but DC was pretty special - made more so by sharing the adventure with JRF!

* Does anyone really need this? The Wizard of Oz reference.
